Week 4 Recount

February26

Another busy week in room 01…you will hear that a lot!

  • Thank you to the parents who were able to attend our assembly on Friday. Well done everyone in rooms 01 and 02 for hosting after only 4 weeks at school! We do it again in week 8.
  • I hope you found the sight word book that came home on Friday. As part of our reading programme we work through a list of sight words. These words form a very important part of your child’s reading programme as they are from a well recognised list of most frequently used words in the English language. It is important that these words are not just learnt in isolation but can be quickly and automatically transferred to the text read. Some words can be sounded out e.g. is, and, some just need to be learnt as a whole e.g. said. For mastery, the words need to be read without the need to sound out every time.To assist in this learning please practice every night and tick any word that your child  is able to read without hesitation.
  • Our morning routine is quickly becoming second nature and it’s nice to see the students getting themselves organised with not a lot of help from mums and dads or me! Such a valuable life skill. There is no need to worry if things are forgotten, there are plenty of reminders built into the day that allow your child to problem solve, another valuable life skill. Forgotten drink bottle…use the internal and external water fountains, forgotten sound book…..use mine to complete activities, forgotten sharing….do it the next day, forgotten hat… play in the shade, work challenging…try another way, persist.
  • Maths: patterning, creating patterns, continuing a pattern, recording and explaining thinking.
  • Reading: sight words, reading strategy – looking at pictures to help decode texts, patterns in early readers.
  • Oral language: sharing topics, oral recounts.
  • Writing: recounts, pattern writing to support reading of sight words – I can see a…. I am a ….
  • Sounds: correct pronunciation, identifying initial sound, correct letter formation.
  • Health and well being: problem solving, identifying emotions, relaxation techniques.

Here’s to week 5, it’s going to be a hot one.

Any questions or comments? Please feel free to post.

February19

Thank you to the families who attended our Acquaintance night last Wednesday. It was lovely to see the students share their school journey so far with the people who matter most to them.

Exciting news…on Friday,  along with room 02 we will be hosting  the Junior Primary assembly. The assembly will start at 11.15am in the school hall. Don’t worry if you can’t make it to this one, we do it again in week 8!

Please check your child’s diary and school bag for notes and remove them. A few have been sent home lately. I’ve had some  students get concerned that their families haven’t seen them.

Reading Workshop.

February18

We would like to run a reading workshop for 2017 reception parents. This will help parents support their child’s reading at home. We are currently in the process of planning this workshop and would like to know numbers as soon as possible.
The times are Tuesday 28th February, at 9:15 and again on Wednesday, 1st March at 2:30. Sessions will run approximately half an hour.
Please email your class teacher with your preference by Wednesday 22nd. We will then confirm session dates and times via the class blog on Friday 24th February.

Please post any questions here, others maybe interested in knowing the answers too. Thank you,
The Reception Team.

Do you find it?

February13

Hope you found this book in your child’s reader folder and practised today’s sound.

Every morning it needs to go on the trolley next to the heart stand so I can add a new sound.

February11

Families are invited to our Acquaintance Night on Wednesday 15th February,6:00pm – 6:45pm. Your child will have a short checklist of activities to complete as they take you through their learning so far this year. I look forward to seeing you all.

Week 2 highlights…

We continued to develop our class expectations, the behaviours that will help us become expert learners. Some of them are…

  • being a good friend and classmate.
  • being a good listener.
  • being organised and ready to learn.
  • working in teams.

We discussed what makes a good and had fun role playing different situations that friends get into: how to share, join in groups, solve problems and wait for turns. We learnt about the importance of eye contact and responding  when spoken to.

We talked about being brave, persisting with new learning and challenges.

We met our buddy class, Gabby’s Year 1 class. A buddy class is a great way to get to know other students in the school while having fun and learning together.

We went to the library and borrowed for the first time. Please remind your child to return their library book every Wednesday.

We had Art with Mr. Pluck.

We talked about being sun smart: the importance of hydrating, sun  block, shade, ways to go from hot and bothered to cool and calm.

Coming up this week..

The start of sharing topics: being a good audience member and asking and responding to questions.

Word study programme: alphabet recognition and writing and the teaching of blending sounds to produce words, distinguishing between the sound and name and the correct letter formation. Please check your child’s reader folder for their sound book.

Maths: sorting and classifying objects, explaining and recording our thinking.

Any questions or comments? Please feel free to post.
